April is Records and Information Management Month and what better time to organize all of your valuable information than right now? The tax season peak has passed and in the midst of gathering everything you needed for it, you were probably reminded of the plethora of documents you wish you didn't have to keep up with. Self storage is a great solution for keeping all of your documents in a safe place. Follow these guidelines to help get you started.

Keep Everything Dry

When it comes to self storage, moisture is not your friend. If available, you may want to consider a climate-controlled unit for your paper documents. Before you load everything into the storage unit, make sure that the containers you’re using aren’t wet in any way. Soaked papers can bleed, grow mold, and eventually decay.

Store Documents above Ground

Every Easy Stop Storage facility strives to provide a safe and dry atmosphere for your belongings. As an extra precaution however, it’s a good idea to place your document-filled containers on stacks of wooden pallets to raise them above ground level. This will provide extra protection from dust, moisture, and pests.

Label Everything Clearly

Rummaging through several decades’ worth of material can be frustrating and time-consuming. Save yourself some trouble by clearly labeling every file and container so that you know exactly where to find what you need. Use descriptive words, dates, colors, and more to sort everything out. Filed tabs are also a great resource.

Lock Up at All Times

After accessing your individual unit, be sure to lock up before you leave. Easy Stop Storage provides 24 hour courtesy cameras, professional management and well-lit grounds to protect your belongings, but extra security never hurts. Lockable boxes are a great form of added protection.

Document storage is an excellent idea if you have stacks of paper laying around the house or office. When the majority of your files aren’t used on a daily basis, why let them take up valuable space? Plus, in today's world, protecting sensitive information is more important than ever. With a storage unit from an Easy Stop Storage facility, your essential documents will remain safe while your home or place of business stays free of clutter.
