To help ease the process, we've listed a recap of our '12 Days of Storage Tips' that some of you may have seen if you follow us on social media. Keep reading for a successful self-storage strategy!

Tip #1: PLANNING FOR YOUR UNIT.

Do your homework before renting a self-storage unit! Make sure you know which size will best suit your specific needs. Measure your largest items to give you an idea of how much space you’ll really need. We offer a variety of unit sizes and we’re always eager to help you pick out which one is right for you, so never hesitate to reach out to our facility managers with any questions you may have!

Tip #2 of 12: PREPARING YOUR ITEMS.

The cleaner your items are when they go into your storage unit, the cleaner they will be when they come out of your unit. Make sure to clear every item of dust, and especially moisture! To keep your larger items protected, cover them with cloth or tarp. Deodorizers also come in handy for maintaining as fresh of a scent as possible!

Tip # 3 of 12: PACKING YOUR ITEMS.

Protecting your items properly is essential. Take the time to thoroughly pack all of your belongings. Use bubble wrap for any breakables and fragile items - it’s both reusable and clear, so you can see what’s inside! Fill each box completely so that items won’t shift around and risk damage. Newspaper is a great space filler if packing peanuts aren’t your thing!

Tip #4 of 12: ORGANIZING YOUR UNIT.

THIS IS IMPORTANT, PEOPLE! You should always make sure you have easy access to everything in your unit. Make a pathway that allows you to reach each box/item. Organize boxes by order of importance and put the most important/most frequently used items at the front. Clearly label every box and list some of the key items the box contains so you know what is inside.

Tip #5 of 12: AVOIDING PESTS.

Use baits and traps to keep those unwanted friends away. Place dryer sheets in the corners of your unit and replace them each month for maximum results, the odor will dissuade pests! Tape canvas drop cloths to the floors and walls before loading your unit to provide an extra layer of protection!

Tip # 6 of 12: ELIMINATING MOISTURE.
Avoid cardboard boxes for long-term storage because the material is more susceptible to humidity. Or, simply keep them off concrete floors which may seep moisture. Plastic boxes with air-tight lids are the best option! You can also allow ventilation throughout the unit by placing your items on wooden pallets. If you store any appliances that use water, make sure to wipe the insides of them with baking soda to remove any trace of water!

Tip # 7 of 12:PREVENTING DIRT BUILDUP.

Cover any fabric items with mattress bags or furniture covers. You can also use a couple of fitted sheets around a mattress/box spring if you prefer to do that!

Tip # 8 of 12: HANDLING LARGE & HEAVY ITEMS.

Disassemble any furniture you can. Place all of the according screws and bolts in a plastic bag and tape it to the piece of furniture so everything stays together! Or, label each bag and place all parts in the same box for reassembly later on. Furniture sliders are also great for making heavy pieces easier to move!

Tip #9 of 12: KNOW YOUR DO’S & DONT’S.

An important factor to consider when it comes to self-storage is what exactly you are and aren’t  allowed to keep inside your unit. Any combustible, flammable, hazardous or toxic materials such as gasoline, propane tanks, pesticides, lamp or motor oil, etc., are major storage “no-no’s.” It’s always a good idea to ask the facility manager about these guidelines ahead of time!

Tip #10 of 12: STORAGE FOR BUSINESS.

If you aren’t one of the many people using off-site storage for business purposes, you may want to consider doing so. It’s a great way to keep your office space organized and clear of clutter! Make sure to shred any documents you no longer need to avoid wasted space and place everything in clearly labeled boxes. You should also consider using waterproof, lockable boxes for business records and files that contain sensitive information.

Tip #11 of 12: MAXIMIZING YOUR SPACE.

No matter what size unit you have, it’s always a great idea to get the most out of your space! Spare bookshelves are great for storing awkward sized items and gaining vertical space. If you’re storing furniture with drawers (such as a dresser or nightstands), fill them! Don’t leave any hollow space. Place brooms, rakes, etc. inside empty trash cans or bins! Vacuum seal clothing or bedding with space saving bags. This makes those bulky items much easier to manage!
